AI Ethics & Evaluation Associate (R&D Projects)

📍 EU — Remote

Seniority level — Junior / Mid

Employment type — Full-time

Eticas.ai audits and evaluates socio-technical AI systems across the globe, stress testing AI systems and their surrounding governance controls and processes to improve the AI system's performance. A share of our evaluation work happens inside large research and development consortia: multi-year, multi-partner projects developing new AI-based technologies (from the design stage to pilot interventions to deployed solutions), which our team advises on, tests, and audits. We're a small company punching above our weight in rooms usually dominated by universities and large consultancies, and we need someone in those rooms with a strong technical understanding and good grasp of AI ethics to advise technical teams, shape our contribution, and spot where Eticas.ai can do more.

This role is a great opportunity for someone to quickly gain an understanding of how an early-stage company moves within one of the hottest verticals in the tech industry right now, AI evaluation.  A fast learner will be able to quickly go from taking minutes to proposing new AI audits/evaluations within these projects.

This role will not come with detailed, step-by-step instructions for every task. You'll be told what a consortium needs and what “good” looks like, then trusted to get there — finding how similar deliverables have been written before, asking a sharp clarifying question when something is unclear, and making a reasonable call instead of waiting to be walked through it.

This is probably not the right role for you if you need written instructions for recurring tasks, tend to wait to be asked rather than flagging things yourself, or find ambiguity stressful rather than energizing.

This is probably exactly the right role for you if you've ever finished a group project by quietly redoing someone else's section because you couldn't stand seeing it done badly, if you like being the person who remembers the deadline nobody else tracked, or if representing a company in a room full of larger, better-resourced organizations sounds exciting rather than intimidating.

How we work

We're a fully remote team, spread across time zones and continents, but we work very closely together. We stay aligned through regular team syncs and project check-ins, and we default to clear, proactive communication and organized documentation, so distance never becomes disconnection.

We give people real flexibility in how and when they work. In return, we expect real ownership: you're accountable for outcomes, not hours online. It's a team built on trust, where independence and collaboration reinforce each other. English is our working language.

Who we are looking for

We care more about attitude than credentials for this one. The person who thrives here:

  • Take ownership without being told to — sees a gap, a risk, or an unanswered email and closes it, rather than waiting for instructions.

  • Is entrepreneurial by temperament: comfortable in a small, early-stage company with limited structure, and energized rather than unsettled by that.

  • Is obsessive about detail — accurate minutes, tracked deadlines, nothing falling through the cracks across several projects running at once.

  • Communicates proactively: ask questions before a problem becomes urgent and gives our small team (and the Head of Public Policy) clear, unprompted status updates rather than waiting to be asked.

  • Is genuinely curious about AI policy, AI evaluation, and AI auditing, and wants to build a career in this field — this role is a real way in, not just an admin job attached to it.

  • Is based in the EU, comfortable working remotely with limited day-to-day oversight, and able to travel for in-person consortium meetings when needed.

On paper, we'd expect roughly 2–4 years of relevant experience, but we will take the right attitude over a perfect CV.

Key responsibilities

  • Own Eticas's day-to-day performance in our EU R&D consortia. You'll be our main representative in work package calls, plenaries and technical meetings, and you'll contribute as a partner, not a note-taker.

  • Advise partner technical teams on responsible AI by design: whether and when to red team, what technical guardrails to build in at the design stage, whether to anonymize or pseudonymize data, and what testing and monitoring protocols a pilot needs.

  • Translate complex legal and ethical mandates—such as the EU AI Act, GDPR, and Horizon Europe frameworks—into socio-technical specifications, bridging data science, technical evaluation, and legal compliance to guide engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders alike.

  • Identify opportunities for developing and testing new auditing and evaluation tools and processes within the projects, building bridges between technical, legal and social aspects of the research and development, and turning projects into true sandboxes for socio-technical innovation.

  • Draft and co-author project reports, including ethics assessments, data management plans, risk analyses, evaluation methodologies and audit reports. Review partner contributions for quality and consistency.

  • Track Eticas's commitments across projects (deliverables, milestones, deadlines and reporting obligations) and flag risks early.

  • After each meeting, share a clear, prioritized readout of decisions, risks, open asks and opportunities, and escalate questions that need deeper policy, legal or audit-methodology input.

  • Maintain organized project documentation so anyone on the team can see where each project stands.

  • Grow quickly from supporting existing work to proposing and scoping new AI audits and evaluations yourself.

Requirements

  • Based in the EU, with the right to work there.

  • Fluency in English (written & spoken).

  • A master's degree in data science, computer science or a related field, or in public or tech policy with substantial data science or quantitative coursework.

  • 2-4 years of experience in a technical or semi-technical role (strong junior technical candidates are also welcome).

  • A working understanding of how ML systems are built, evaluated and deployed, enough to engage credibly with engineering teams.

  • Baseline familiarity with AI ethics and socio-technical auditing, and a real drive to go deeper.

  • Strong written communication skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong organizational skills, with a track record of keeping multiple workstreams and deadlines on track.

  • Experience with Horizon Europe or other R&D projects is a plus.

  • Comfort using AI tools for scale while maintaining judgement & original thinking (read our AI usage policy).

  • Comfort working independently and proactively in a small, remote, fast-moving team.

Who we are

Eticas.ai has completed more than 200 evaluations across 15+ industries, with clients across four continents, covering expert and predictive systems, LLM-based systems, and agentic systems. Our work follows a repeating cycle of independent evaluation, continuous monitoring, and periodic re-evaluation — giving organizations verifiable evidence that their AI is doing what it was designed to do, while remaining fair, safe, and accountable.

Eticas.ai is the sister organization of Eticas Foundation, a non-profit whose mission is to build public-interest auditing capacity through community-led audits and shared evidence on AI harms.
